Torrance California
Torrance is a city that lies to the southwest of Los Angeles County, it occupies an area of around 50sq kilometers with residents numbering 150,000. The city motto is ‘A Balanced City’, which refers to the fastidious planning that the city developed from.

The city of Torrance takes it’s name from it’s founder Jared S. Torrance who was a real estate developer from New York. At the turn of the 1900’s he decided to create a planned residential and industrial community south of LA. He purchased land and recruited an architect. An unplanned benefit came from the discovery of oil. Torrance’s first oil well was dug in 1921 and doubled the population in one year to nearly 3,000. Within the next three years there were 582 producing oil wells in Torrance. The Exxon Mobil refinery is located to the north of the city and is responsible for most of the petroleum supply to Southern California. The automakers Toyota and Honda have their USA Headquarters in Torrance.

Attractions in the area include the 1.5 miles of Torrance Beach, The Madrona freshwater Marsh and the Del Amo Fashion Center.

Torrance has many recreational activities available and features 24 parks comprising 300 acres of parkland, golfing, swimming, tennis and more. The largest parks are Wilson Park and Columbia Park.
