Salinas California
Salinas is a city located in Northern California, just south of the Monterey Bay area and is the county seat of Monterey County. It has a land mass of approximately 23 square miles with a population of around 145,000 residents.

Salinas, named after the salt marsh that used to run through the area, and started out as a mere stagecoach stop between Monterey and San Juan Bautista. A man named Elias Howe acquired 80 acres of land in the mid 19th Century, that was part of a rancho, and built a house, it became known as the Half Way House. He entertained guests with gambling based on the arrival time of the stagecoach but decided to sell the house after 18 months. It passed to a man named Trescony who built a small hotel, a store and began to set out the plans for a city. The City of Salinas was incorporated in 1874.

The ranching and dairy industries gave way to diverse agriculture as the marches were reclaimed by immigrant workers. Grains were the first crops to flourish and after mass irrigation was introduced lettuce, broccoli strawberries, artichokes and sugar beet were all cultivated on a large scale. The cities nick-name is America’s Salad Bowl.

In 1911 the first California Rodeo was held in Salinas a strong tradition that still exists today. Salinas is also well known for being the birthplace of the great American writer, John Steinbeck. It is home to the National Steinbeck Center and the John Steinbeck Library and hosts the annual Steinbeck Festival.

The cities climate is a moderate Mediterranean climate with cool winds that reach the city unimpeded from the Bay. Travel to Salinas is easy with the 101 highway bisecting the city. It has its own airport and railroad station. It is a well planned and maintained city with good municipal services, it is home to over 20 parks and sporting facilities, with many gorgeous beaches nearby.
