Pasadena California
Pasadena is a city that is the cultural heart of the San Gabriel Valley in Los Angeles County. It has a land area of 23 square miles and is home to a population of around 150,000 people. It holds a high status as a city to move to in Los Angeles County and is conveniently located 10 miles northeast of Downtown LA.

Pasadena has a strong historical tradition with events such as the Tournament of Roses Parade dating back to the nineteenth century. It started out as ranchland but parcels of land were sold to settlers from Indiana escaping harsh winters. The California Colony of Indiana soon established itself with civic infrastructure like electricity and sewer lines. Because the settlement wanted a Post Office it needed to rename itself; Pasadena was chosen and the name has Native American roots, meaning “of the Valley”. The city was incorporated in 1886. The railroad connections helped bring wealthy winter tourists who enjoyed its many cultural attractions like the Pasadena Playhouse, the Rose Bowl Stadium, Museums, Art Galleries and Musical Shows.

The mid twentieth century brought a change in fortune for Pasadena with the tourist industry dwindling. Institutions such as The California Institute of Technology and The Jet Propulsion Laboratory increased in importance during the Second World War and many scientists and engineers moved to Pasadena to make it a more modern industrialized city. Construction of Route 110, the Pasadena Freeway, encouraged many families to move to Pasadena as it became an attractive place to live for people working in industrial areas in Los Angeles. The 1960’s encouraged economic growth and many large companies moved to the city, the city had to balance preservation of historic character with urban modernization plans. The city officials succeeded as Pasadena is now considered a very pleasant place to live. Tree-lined streets with 1920’s Greene and Green bungalows, the wild parrot flocks that bring color and song to all areas and a revitalized downtown area filled with shopping, fantastic restaurants and the iconic Colorado Street Bridge.
