Oxnard California
Oxnard is has the greatest population of the cities of Ventura County, it is home to nearly 200,000 citizens on an area of around 37 square miles. It is a major Southern California mass transit hub for buses and trains. It’s coastal location is home to Port Hueneme and NAS Point Mugu, two naval bases and a large commercial port.
The American Indian, Spanish and Mexican inhabitants used the area as ranch land and in 1850 the area was settled by American farmers, who cultivated barley and lima beans. Oxnard is named after Henry, James, Robert and Ben Oxnard who opened an large scale industrial sugar beet facility in the area, was incorporated at the turn of the twentieth Century. It remained an agricultural community because of the Oxnard Plain, the highest quality agricultural soils, coupled with Oxnard’s perfect climate, combine to make one of the most fertile areas in the world. After the second World War the Naval Bases encouraged the development of the aerospace and communications industries in Oxnard.
Oxnard has been known for several different crops over the years, including: sugar beets, lima beans, Stock (the cut flower), and strawberries. Oxnard is the largest grower of strawberries in California, this is a serious industry with and supplies the 1/3 of California’s strawberries each year. This accounts for nearly a quarter of all strawberries produced in the United States. The sweet red berry is celebrated annually in Oxnard at the California Strawberry Festival where a diverse range of products featuring the fruit from champagne to pizza are showcased.
Oxnard is home to 12 beaches with exceptional surfing conditions and unbelievably soft sand. The sand dunes in Oxnard, which have shrunk in recent years, have been used to recreate many sandy movie locations.
