Oceanside California
Oceanside is a beach city (as the name suggests) in San Diego County located just south of Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base. The coastline and beaches stretch for over 3.5 miles. It has a population of around 165,000 on a land area of 42 sqmiles.
Oceanside formed around the Mission in the San Luis Rey Valley. The true founder, Jack Meyers, was granted 160 acres by the US government. When a real estate developer, Hayes, requested a local post office, he submitted the name Oceanside and put the small community on the map.
In the early days of Oceanside a steady rate of growth was due to tourism and relocating families. A wharf company was established building a wharf entirely of wooden pilings. A terrible storm resulted in the destruction of the wharf but the wood was reclaimed and used to construct Oceanside’s first pier. This was the first of five piers in Oceanside, which now boasts the longest pier on the West Coast, measuring over 1,900 ft.
World War II saw the construction of the nation's largest Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton, and the demand for housing and civic services exceeded supply. The population of Oceanside leapt from around 5,000 people in 1940 to over 12,000 one decade later. The Marine Base continued to grow and a mere 2 years later the residents had increased by another 6,000.
Oceanside currently enjoys property tax that is one of the lowest in the county. Oceanside has a large manufacturing sector as well as a number of bio-technology companies. Agriculture is still important to Oceanside's economy; the climate being perfectly suited to cultivation of avocados, citrus, tomatoes and flowers.
Ocean Side is home to the California Surf Museum, the Audubon Society-Buena Vista Museum and the Carlsbad Mineral Water Spa and was used as a location for the well known movie “Top Gun”
