Modesto California.
Modesto is a city inland in California’s Stanislaus County. It has a population of around 200,000 people who occupy an area of around forty square miles. The cities motto: “Water, Wealth, Contentment, Health” speaks to its agricultural past and the many rivers surrounding the city.

Modesto was founded in 1860 when the Southern Pacific Railroad built a stop there on the route that ran between Sacramento and Los Angeles. Most of the earlier settlements in the area were constructed on riverbanks (as they were the prime form of transportation). Many of these residents moved everything, even their houses, to the new city and Modesto rapidly became the centre of Stanislaus County and from then on its permanency as the trading center of the county was assured. In 1884 it was incorporated and in the same year steps were taken to organize irrigation districts to supply water for the surrounding lands which were devoted to grain growing and cattle.

The population of Modesto continued to grow throughout the early twentieth century and many grand Victorian buildings were constructed along with the famed Modesto Arch that proudly displays the cities motto.

Unfortunately, during the 1970’s, revitalization efforts led to many of the historic buildings being destroyed rather than restored in the downtown area. Concerned citizens stepped in and purchased buildings like the McHenry Mansion which has been lovingly renovated to its former glory.

Hot summers where the temperature rises above the 100° mark make Modesto a natural place for trees to be planted. With more than 55 parks in the city, it's not hard to find a place to relax or play or just sit in the shade.
