Irvine California
Irvine is a large, modern city in Orange County, it has residents of over 200,000 people on a land area of about 70sq miles.
The Irvine Ranch was wholly purchased by James Irvine in the 1860’s from his previous partners Flint and Bixby, his son, James Irvine Jr. began the shift from ranching to farming in the late 1800s and incorporated the Irvine Company. The fertile flat valley area became an ideally suited to the cultivation of crops such as barley and lima beans, later more diversity was introduced and asparagus, avocados, strawberries and citrus groves also flourished.
In the early 1888, a town took hold from the agricultural activity and extension of the Santa Fe Railroad, it was originally named Myford, after Irvine Jr’s son and began to attract more residents and was later renamed Irvine. At the beginning of the 20th century some land was sold to the government and two Marine Corps bases were established. Other small scale development projects continued on the land around the time of WWII but it was not until the University of California requested a large tract of land on which to build a College Campus in 1960 that the Irvine Company changed direction. The former township of Irvine was renamed East Irvine and it’s historic structures were carefully preserved. William Pereira, a the architect for the University set about planning a new city to surround the University campus. Many neighborhoods, each with a distinctive architecture, were completed in a decade. From 1970 to 1980, Irvine was California's fastest growing city. Threatened with possible annexations by other cities, Irvine decided to incorporate in 1971.
Irvine is considered one of the best places to live in the USA, it has a diverse economic foundation and many business have chosen the city for their headquarters, examples include; Gateway Computers, Taco Bell, Felt Bicycles, Mossimo Clothing and Edwards Lifesciences.
The 37,000 acres of undeveloped land surrounding the city is now known as The Irvine Ranch Conservancy. In 2006, The Irvine Ranch was honored by designation as a National Natural Landmark. It is one of the few places in Southern California where a uniquely diverse series of habitats has been preserved that stretch from the coastline to the mountains. Many forms of wildlife are protected such as sage scrub, vitally important geological formations and endangered animal species.
