Escondido California
Escondido is a city in San Diego County. It has a population of 140,000 people residing in an area of 38 square miles.

A judge from nearby San Diego, Oliver S. Witherby purchased the land that is now Escondido and began to raise cattle; he also built a mill - which he named Escondido Mining Company – to process the gold discovered on his land.

In 1886, the Thomas Brothers purchased the land with the vision that Escondido would become a special town. To this end, they donated land for the building of churches, built a large hotel and part of USC was established there. The railroad came along with other civic services and the boomtown was incorporated as the City of Escondido two years later. Growth flourished; land was subdivided and citrus orchards, avocados and grapes were cultivated.

The next major shift in the demographics of the city came with the construction of Highway 395, which linked Escondido to San Diego, This 1950’s project sparked the next wave of population growth. Housing was in short supply and the former vines and fruit orchards were developed into housing; this naturally led to a decline in the production of citrus fruits and culminated with the closure of the citrus packing plant in 1960. Four years later the enclosed Escondido Village Mall opened followed by further population expansion. When the final phase of the I15 freeway construction completed in 1980 the next 20 years was focused on the urbanization of Escondido. New housing developments, shopping centers and light industry were the new focus. Fortunately, some farming land remains, and the City of Escondido continues to plan for city growth while enhancing the beauty and comfort of the city’s historic and rural landscapes.
