Chula Vista is a large city in the South Bay Area of San Diego County in Southern California. The city has an area of over 50 square miles with estimated resident numbers at approximately 220,000. Chula Vista means “Pretty View” in Spanish and was probably named for the pacific view.

Chula Vista was originally extensive ranching land that passed from the Spanish to the Mexican government. Mexican governor Pico gifted the land to his son in law who farmed the land for a decade before selling it to developers. Eventually the Santa Fe Railroad was extended to the area and the company, partnered with civic developers began to plan a new town. Many lots were sold and they developed a small railroad linking the Bay Area towns. Agriculture flourished with the introduction of irrigation methods, lemons were the most plentiful crop.

Chula Vista was incorporated in 1911. A few years later Chula Vista became industrialized with the construction of a kelp processing factory, these raw materials went on to create explosives extensively used in WWI. The Second World War was a boom time for the population of Chula Vista when an Aerospace manufacturing relocated their plant there. The demand for workers was huge and the population tripled as many remained in situ after the war. The agricultural land gave way to housing development.

The U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista is dedicated to the development of the Olympic team of the USA. About 4,000 United States athletes attend the 155-acre complex each year. It is the only warm-weather, year-round, multi-sport training facility. It supports many sports including: Athletics, Cycling, Field Hockey, Soccer and Triathlon amongst others.

Families love to visit the Chula Vista Nature Center which exhibits plants and animals native to the Bay area and other wetland habitats. Visitors can enjoy seeing endangered Green Sea Turtles, birds of prey, stingrays, and jellyfish.

The arts are well represented with the local On Stage Playhouse is a run as a not for profit community theatre that performs many plays and musicals throughout its season.
