Bakersfield California.
Bakersfield is a large city in Kern County, Northern California with about 300,000 residents living on an area of 100 sqmiles. It is unlike most of California’s larger cities, maintaining a conservative emphasis and thanks to the Southern roots of many residents.
It takes its name from Colonel Thomas Baker who took it upon himself to settle many communities in various states across the USA in the 19th Century. Baker made his way to California and the San Joachim Valley. He was civically minded and held many positions of office. One piece of legislation he was involved in (the Montgomery Act) gave rise to the creation of Bakersfield. The Act allowed for the land to be reclaimed from the swamp that was present in the Southern Valley. Baker built a home; close to the railroad station (that lay between Sacramento and Los Angeles). More people settled there as the supply of provisions was plentiful. Baker was well known for his hospitality, and word spread about travelers who stayed with him and how their horses were fed and rested from Baker’s Field.
The early settlers had to contend with a slew of natural disasters, ranging from devastating fires and floods to the extreme damage of earthquakes. As many were migrants escaping from the “Southern Dust Bowl” problems of the 1930’s they had no option except to roll their sleeves up and rebuild time and time again.
Kern County as well as being a major oil producer, is the third most productive agricultural county in the United States. Nuts (almonds and pistachio’s), Citrus Fruits, Cotton and Carrots are predominant crops grown in the region. Bakersfield has a semi-arid dry steppe climate that ensures these crops thrive in perfect conditions.
Bakersfield residents enjoy the outdoor life and make good use of the many sporting facilities the city has to offer – from the extreme thrill of White Water rafting on the Kern River to a round of Golf there are also many tennis courts and community parks for the whole family to enjoy.
Bakersfield also has a rich cultural aspect with many theatres, a symphony orchestra, museums, art galleries as well as gastronomic delights. Its musical side retains some of the South too with its own version of Country Music called “Bakersfield Sound”.
Bakersfield is well connected with Meadows Field Passenger Airport as well as being served by 3 highways (99, 58 and 178).
